So, have you heard? “You Know My Name” from Courtney Love’s double A-side single launched this week, and you know what? It’s actually pretty good. Delivering two and a half minutes of no nonsense punk-influenced rock, it also casts a familiar sound – her on again/off again band from the late 80s/early 90s, Hole.

Aside from the drama, feuding, controversy – and accolades – that followed the band during its heyday, what I also remember most is a heavily peroxided Courtney effortlessly putting the babydoll and slip dress through its paces. You had to love her prom-queen-gone-rogue style…

Courney Love - Hole

Hole

Courtney was all smeared lipstick, torn tights, unruly hair – but it was the dresses that were so iconic to her look. A mix of lace, lithe and Lolita, it’s a style that still has appeal today.

The whole statement of pairing sweet, innocence with overt sexuality was meant to challenge society’s definition of femininity. It was a defining 90s look and Hole was known for it. So, with Mary Janes, red lipstick and peroxide at the ready – if you don’t know her name by now, it’s Courtney, bitch!

It’s payweek and we’re finally getting our bank accounts replenished after those hedonistic weeks of unrelenting spending and rummaging through our poor wallets, of which I’ve dubbed it as “the Christmas pillage”. And, with that joyful/dismal day in February that you either love or loathe looming, it’s also the perfect time to shop for Valentine’s Day.

Coupled or not, there are some seriously lustful things out that will keep you going until new season truly kicks in. So, drop your lover the hint to gift you something gorgeous – or as Destiny’s Child encouraged us back in 2009, simply continue being an independent woman and proudly declare, that Jimmy Choo clutch bag? I bought it!

Isabel Marant for H&M

This week Huffington Post revealed the most popular jacket of 2013 was indeed a trophy jacket. A trophy jacket from the deservedly-hyped Isabel Marant for H&M collection to be exact.

Be it baubles, sequins or a power print, I love a statement jacket. While I’m aware that trinketed and jewelled wear isn’t for everyone, I’d say look past the flash aspect for a minute and you really do have something completely wearable. The key to making it work is to let it work by keeping the rest of your look simple. I love an all black, rocking skinny ensemble topped off with a boxy or bomber-shaped trophy cover up.

Like its distant cousin, the maxi dress, trophy jackets ask for minimal effort but deliver maximum effect. What’s not to love?
