I’m gearing up for my annual snowboarding holiday and this year we’re going to Japan! It may seem somewhat far to go, seeing how France and Switzerland are just a couple of hours away, but I’ve been promised glorious powder, endless runs, fabulous food and really, a place like no other!

On the slopes, my gear is absolutely function first – taped seams, waterproofing, insulation and the most amazing board ever, my rainbow hued Roxy Ollie Pop, natch. However, once off the slopes and back at the cabin or down in the local mountain town bars and shops, that’s when I can truly tap into my inner skater grrl persona – mixed with a touch of the catwalk of course. This is my kind of après style…

CABIN FEVER…
Only cashmere-soft, laid back loungewear will do after a long morning’s run. This is the uniform for curling up by a roaring log fire.

PAINTING THE MOUNTAIN TOWN RED…
Bring on the beer and burgers – or in my case sake and sushi – it might be hard to step out again into the cold harsh elements, but snowboarders do know how to party!

Every Winter I’m at odds whether to just bite the bullet and get myself a Bernstock Speirs veiled beanie. Their iconic, street-meets-catwalk beanie makes hat hair pretty much worth it. How can a single layer of netting create such a sartorial winner?

Unfortunately, while I can’t pass my credit card over for a £85+ beanie, a quick Google search has led me to Etsy.

Thanks to girls who have a bit more time than me these days, I got my beanie fix this Winter.

There’s quite a few versions on Etsy, so I’ve picked a few of my favourites below. Of course, if you still pine for the luxe originals, you can shop them direct from the Bernstock Speirs online shop.

Over to handmade-ville, this is Caged Couture from Cali…

I’m really hoping this micro-trend is here to stay. Like Nike Blazers, I also waited a good year before I succumbed and bought myself a pair. (FYI, they are very comfortable and go with everything, why did I wait so long?!) Either way, I’ll continue to wear mine proudly to the corner shop on cold Sunday mornings. After all, as most fashionistas know, you should treat the sidewalk like it’s your runway.

Winter and texture go hand-in-hand where the illusion of volume from something that’s furry and fuzzy simply makes for a feeling of warmth. I would also like to think that most of us just need something fun to lift our spirits when it’s depressingly dark and cold out!

Faux fur has come a long way. It’s looking and feeling more like the real thing, but without the dreaded politics. What I love the most about this season’s shaggy textures is the colours! I recently found this fabulous new label, Shrimps by Hannah Weiland; injecting pure psychedelic chic through her capsule collection of faux fur coats and clutches, I adore her take on the pile.

Topshop have created their own sunny version this season. You simply can’t feel down in this canary yellow number.

Same goes for ASOS.

For the record, I’m Switzerland on the whole fur debate. I briefly worked in luxury and we sold brands that used real fur. Never have I seen such hatred and damnation from people who truly abhor the use of real fur. On this note, Meadham Kirchhoff x Topshop’s latest uber-collection features this utterly divine Mongolian sheepskin coat. Surely there’s a way to reach a sweet resolution?
